Important Instructions

  1. The maximum marks for the written test will be 300 and the maximum marks for the interview will be 200.
  2. The question paper will be objective in all subjects, the question paper for General Knowledge and Mathematics will be in both Hindi and English languages.
  3. The standard of the question paper in Mathematics will be that of the Matriculation Examination and the question paper in all other subjects will be of that of the graduate level.

UPSC CDS Syllabus

English

The standard of the papers on English will be such as to test the candidate's knowledge of English language and comprehension of English words. Under this, candidates can be asked about Parts of Speech, Tenses, Articles, Identifying Wrong or Famous English Idioms and Proverbs.

Common sense

Under general knowledge, questions can be asked from the candidates on current affairs like sports-players, awards, important persons, economy, conferences etc. Apart from this, questions will also be asked from History, Geography etc. of India.

Early Maths (CDS Syllabus Maths)

Number system, profit-loss, percentage, work-time, tap-cistern, greatest common multiple-least common multiple, discount, shared, boat-river, train, time-distance, simple interest, compound interest, decimal number

  1. Elementary Number Theory: Law of divisibility, least and greatest common factors, prime numbers, logarithms, uses of logarithms, logarithm tables, composite prime numbers.
  2. Algebra: Simple Factorization, Reminder Theorem, HCF, LCM, Theorem of Polynomials, Solution of Quadratic Equations, Linear Equations or Inequalities, Remainder Theorem, Analysis and graphical solution etc.
  3. Trigonometry: Height and distance, use of trigonometric tables, value of sine, cos, tan etc.
  4. Geometry: Lines and angles, Plane figures, Sides and angles of a triangle, Similar triangles, Congruence of medians and altitudes, Congruence of triangles, Properties of angles at a point, Parallel lines, Properties of angles, Rectangles and Tangent in square circle and its properties, parallelogram etc.
  5. Perimeter: Areas of square, parallelogram, rectangle, triangle and circle, surface area and volume of cuboids, volume of figures Area, lateral surface and right circular cone and cone surface area of lander, area of sphere, etc.
  6. Statistics: Collection and tabulation of statistical data, pie charts, histograms, bar charts, frequency polygons, etc. Measurement of central tendency .

Officers Training Academy (CDS OTA)

Officers Training Academy (CDS OTA) is included to test the English and General Awareness of the candidate. Its exam is offline mode (pen-paper based) consisting of objective type questions. The only major difference between CDS OTA exam and CDS exam for NDA, IMA and IAF is that it does not have Mathematics section while others have Mathematics section.

Officer Training Academy (OTA) is one of the most renowned training establishments of the Indian Army. It is solely focused on training officers for Short Service Commission.

CDS OTA Syllabus

Questions are asked from only 2 subjects in the CDS OTA exam, which are General Knowledge and English, under which questions are asked from the following topics-

  • English: Spotting Error questions, Sentence Arrangement Questions, Ordering Of Words In A Sentence, Fill In Blank Questions, Synonyms & Antonyms, Selecting Words, Ordering Of Sentences, Comprehension Questions, Idioma And Phrases, etc.
  • General Knowledge: Economics, Physics, Current Affairs, Politics, Chemistry , Sociology, History, Awards related to Defence, Geography, Environment, Sports, Biology, Cultural, Name of book author, etc.

CDS Interview

SSB Interview consists of two phases – Phase A, and Phase B, these phases are given in detail below-

  1. Stage (A): It consists of Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test Picture Perception and Description Test. Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their performance in both the tests.
  2. Stage (B): It consists of Interview, Group Testing Officer Task, Psychology Test and Conference. All these tests are conducted in 4 days.

Then the selection of the candidates is decided by the Interviewing Officer, Group Testing Officer and Psychiatric Officer.

UPSC CDS Syllabus 2023 – FAQ

Q. Are the subjects and syllabus same for IMA and OTA exam?

Ans. No, in IMA there are 3 subjects English, Maths and General Knowledge while in OTA there are 2 subjects English and General Knowledge.

Q. What is the level of Maths in CDS exam?

Ans. The level of maths is up to 10th standard only.

Q. How many attempts are allowed for CDS OTA exam?

Ans. There is no restriction on the number of attempts made by the candidates till they fulfill all the eligibility prescribed by the UPSC Board.
